Some of the more common asbestos-containing products are pipe-covering,
insulating cement, insulating block, asbestos cloth, gaskets, packing
materials, thermal seals, fireproofing spray, vinyl floor tile, ceiling
tile, adhesives, coatings, acoustical textures, duct insulation, roofing
products, brake and clutch assemblies, insulated electrical wire and panels,
and joint compound.
Massive amounts of asbestos were used in shipbuilding and commercial
construction prior to the mid-1970's. A number of former military personnel,
particularly naval, also
came into contact with asbestos during their service. Exposure may have
been direct or indirect, lengthy or brief. The typical exposure period
is lengthy, but some persons with short but intense exposures can develop
mesothelioma. Mesothelioma can also occur from non-occupational exposure;
there has been cases of women with the disease whose exposure came from
washing the clothing of men (father, husband, son) who worked with asbestos.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that there are
asbestos containing materials in most of the nation's approximately 107,000
primary and secondary schools, and 733, 000 public and commercial buildings.
